IBDP English

At IB Pathways Education, we recognize English as a truly global language — one that connects cultures, ideas, and academic disciplines worldwide. The International Baccalaureate (IB) emphasizes the importance of English across all its programmes: PYP, MYP, and DP.

In the IB Diploma Programme (DP), English Language & Literature empowers students to explore the relationship between language, literature, and the world around them. Through this course, learners become confident communicators, critical thinkers, and thoughtful collaborators.

Why IBDP English (Language & Literature) Matters

IBDP English (L & L) enables students to engage deeply with language and literary texts while understanding how language shapes culture, identity, and global perspectives.

Through this course, students learn to:

  • Communicate ideas clearly, precisely, and effectively
  • Understand and interpret the world through texts, media, and discourse
  • Closely analyze literary and non-literary texts in their entirety
  • Develop cultural awareness and critical literacy skills

At IB Pathways Education, we guide students to move beyond surface-level reading and develop confident, well-structured academic expression.

The Structure of IBDP English

At the DP stage, students study English Language & Literature at one of two levels:

  • Standard Level (SL)
  • Higher Level (HL)

Assessment Breakdown

At both levels, students are assessed through:

  • Internal Assessment (IA): 20%
  • External Assessment (EA): 80%

To meet DP requirements, students must choose one course from the Studies in Language and Literature group:

  • Language A: Literature
  • Language A: Language & Literature
  • Literature and Performance

Note: Not all IB World Schools offer Language A: Language & Literature.

The IBDP English (Language & Literature) course is further divided into four core parts, studied at both SL and HL, ensuring depth, balance, and analytical rigor.
