IBDP Geography

At IB Pathways Education, we believe Geography helps students understand the world as an interconnected system of people, places, and environments. Through exploration and critical analysis, IBDP Geography examines physical landscapes, human societies, economic systems, and environmental challenges.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) includes Geography at the Diploma Programme (DP) stage to promote global awareness, sustainability, and international-mindedness. The subject acts as a vital bridge between the natural sciences and social sciences, combining scientific and socio-economic methodologies.

Why IBDP Geography Matters

IBDP Geography develops a holistic understanding of global issues, encouraging learners to think critically about human welfare and environmental sustainability.

Through IBDP Geography, students learn to:

  • Understand relationships between people, places, and environments
  • Identify geographic issues, physical processes, and human-induced challenges
  • Analyze global patterns, diversity, and change
  • Develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills for complex real-world issues

At IB Pathways Education, we help students connect theory with real-world geographical challenges.

The Importance of IBDP Geography

Geography offers insights into political systems, economic development, resource management, and environmental sustainability. It equips students with the tools to understand and respond to global challenges.

IBDP Geography encourages students to:

  • Examine physical and human systems critically
  • Explore sustainable management of natural and human resources
  • Evaluate solutions to geographic and environmental problems
  • Develop analytical skills applicable across disciplines

The Structure of IBDP Geography

At the DP stage, students study Geography at one of two levels:

  • Standard Level (SL)

  • Higher Level (HL)

Assessment Breakdown

At both SL and HL, students are assessed through:

  • Internal Assessment (IA): 20%
  • External Assessment (EA): 80%

The Internal Assessment involves fieldwork, where students collect, analyze, and evaluate geographic data and present their findings in a structured written report. The External Assessment consists of multiple examination papers, as per IB assessment guidelines.
