IBDP History

At IB Pathways Education, we believe that understanding the past is essential to making sense of the present. History helps students explore how political, economic, social, and cultural forces have shaped the modern world.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) emphasizes historical awareness at the Diploma Programme (DP) stage, encouraging students to develop international-mindedness through the study of world history. IBDP History focuses on comparison, multiple perspectives, and critical analysis rather than memorization.

Why IBDP History Matters

IBDP History equips students with the ability to analyze events from different viewpoints and understand global connections across time.

Through IBDP History, students learn to:

  • Develop interest in the past and analyze events from multiple perspectives
  • Understand the history and traditions of diverse regions across the world
  • Build a strong sense of historical chronology and contextual awareness
  • Develop historical consciousness, critical thinking, and analytical skills

At IB Pathways Education, we help students move beyond facts and dates to develop meaningful historical understanding.

The Importance of IBDP History

History sharpens decision-making and analytical abilities. Students who understand historical patterns are better equipped to interpret current global events and make informed judgments.

IBDP History encourages students to:

  • Compare historical events across regions and time periods

  • Evaluate causes, consequences, and significance of events

  • Understand continuity and change in contemporary societies

This approach prepares students for higher education in humanities, law, international relations, and social sciences.

The Structure of IBDP History

At the DP stage, students study History at one of two levels:

  • Standard Level (SL)
  • Higher Level (HL)

Assessment & Teaching Time

Higher Level (HL)

  • Teaching Time: 240 hours
  • External Assessment: 80%
  • Internal Assessment: 20%

Standard Level (SL)

  • Teaching Time: 150 hours
  • External Assessment: 80%
  • Internal Assessment: 20%

At both levels, assessments emphasize analysis, evaluation, and structured argumentation.
