IBDP Physics
At IB Pathways Education, we believe Physics answers one of the most fundamental human questions — “Why does it happen?” From the motion of particles to the forces shaping the universe, Physics helps students understand how the world truly works.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) places strong emphasis on Physics across all its flagship programmes — PYP, MYP, and DP. At the Diploma Programme (DP) level, Physics becomes a powerful subject that builds scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, and real-world application.
Why IBDP Physics Matters
Physics develops scientific literacy by helping students observe, question, and analyze natural phenomena. Through structured inquiry and experimentation, students gain a deep understanding of both scientific concepts and the scientific process.
Through IBDP Physics, students learn to:
- Understand the scientific method and its role in science and technology
- Apply methods and techniques to explore complex systems
- Analyze data and evaluate investigative processes
- Develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills
At IB Pathways Education, we guide students to think like scientists — curious, logical, and confident.
The Importance of IBDP Physics
Physics reveals the principles, theories, and conventions that govern the universe. It encourages students to appreciate the mathematical elegance of science and apply first principles in everyday life.
Students with a strong foundation in Physics typically:
Develop advanced investigation, manipulation, and analysis skills
Understand how scientists design experiments and interpret results
Gain confidence in solving real-world and theoretical problems
From understanding electric current to exploring advanced mechanics, Physics nurtures curiosity and imagination.
The Structure of IBDP Physics
At the DP stage, students study Physics at one of two levels:
- Standard Level (SL)
- Higher Level (HL)
Assessment Breakdown
At both SL and HL, assessment is divided into:
- Internal Assessment (IA): 20%
- External Assessment (EA): 80%
The Internal Assessment requires students to conduct an individual scientific investigation, while the External Assessment consists of three examination papers designed to test conceptual understanding, application, and analysis.
What Students Do in IBDP Physics
IBDP Physics is highly experimental and inquiry-driven.
1. Scientific Investigation
Students learn to:
- Collect, process, and analyze experimental data
- Design and evaluate investigations
- Communicate findings clearly and scientifically
2. Conceptual Application
Students are encouraged to:
- Apply physics principles to unfamiliar situations
- Solve complex problems logically and mathematically
- Develop resilience and precision in scientific thinking
